RTO, RPO and the 3-2-1 backup rule

RTO and RPO make recovery concrete; the architecture follows from them.

RTO is the recovery time objective: how quickly systems must be back after an outage. RPO is the recovery point objective: how much data loss is acceptable between the last backup and the outage. Values are set per business process and drive backup frequency.

The 3-2-1 rule is common: at least three copies of the data, on two different media types, with one outside the company site. A single failure can then no longer affect all copies at once.
